What personal information is collected?

Upon mutual agreement with Winnie Lau and/or Empowered Life Financial Inc; during the course of the relationship, it will be necessary for the client to provide a variety of personal financial information. Personal information means information about an identifiable individual.

This includes an individual's name, home/work address and phone numbers, age, sex, marital or family status, identifying number(s), financial information, education history, etc. The quality of the work undertaken on behalf of the client requires this personal information to be accurate and complete.

All information is held in the strictest confidence and that no information shall be divulged about the client’s personal situation to any outside organization or government agency without the client’s prior consent, unless as may be required by law.

It is further understood that in accordance with the Personal Information Protection Act and the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), the client directly authorizes and instructs Winnie Lau and/or Empowered Life Financial Inc. to maintain information of a personal and private nature that could be reasonably considered pertinent or necessary in the provision of financial advice until such a time as requested by the client in writing to destroy such information.

Why is personal information collected?

We collect only the personal information we need for the purposes of providing services to our clients including personal information to open and manage an account, deliver requested products and services, enroll a client in a program, contact clients about appointments, follow up with clients to determine satisfaction with products and services, notify clients of upcoming event and education of interest, meet regulatory requirements.

We normally collect client information directly from our clients. We may collect your information from other persons with your consent or as authorized by law.  We inform our clients, before or at the time of collecting personal information of the purposes for which we are collecting the information.

We also collect information from time to time from individuals from the website or external events who are interested in being informed of other ongoing events held by Winnie Lau and/or Empowered Life Financial Inc.

How do we use your information?

We may use the information we collect from you when you register, make a purchase, sign up for our newsletter, respond to a survey or marketing communication, surf the website, or use certain other site features in the following ways:

  • To personalize user’s experience and to allow us to deliver the type of content and product offerings in which you are most interested.
  • To improve our website in order to better serve you.
  • To allow us to better service you in responding to your customer service requests.

Third-Party Professionals – During the process of providing financial recommendations it may, from time to time, be prudent to consult with other third-party professionals such as a lawyer, accountant, or another experienced colleague that specializes in the same field. In the event that such a consultation is deemed necessary, the client will be advised and asked to approve such consultation, which may include a consultation fee.

Use of Service providers: We may use service providers in Canada and the United States of America that may have access to personal information for the following purposes:

  • Transcribe meeting/call notes
  • E-mail service provider
  • Deliver requested products and services
  • Follow up with the client to determine satisfaction with product and services
  • Follow up with clients for booking appointments and events
  • Notify clients of upcoming events or information of interest (such as a newsletter etc.)

We use the following Client information service providers:

Our Website contact forms are protected by SSL certificate encryption.   All contact forms are secured via SSL encryption but do not cover the necessary Security for the HIPAA Act.  As such we do not ask for any health Insurance information over or on our website forms.  

Consent: We ask for consent to collect, use or disclose client personal information, except in specific circumstances where the collection, use, or disclosure without consent is authorized or required by law. We may assume your consent in cases where you volunteer information for an obvious purpose. A client may withdraw consent to the use and disclosure of personal information at any time unless the personal information is necessary for us to fulfill our legal obligations. We will respect your decision, but we may not be able to provide you with certain products and services if we do not have the necessary personal information.

How do we safeguard personal information?

We make every reasonable effort to ensure that client information is accurate and complete. Winnie Lau, her team, and/or Empowered Life Financial Inc. rely on the clients to notify us if there is a change to the personal information that may affect their relationship with our organization. If you are aware of an error in our information about you, please let us know and we will correct it on request whenever possible. In some cases, we may ask for your written request for correction.

We protect client's personal information in any manner appropriate for the sensitivity of the information. We make every reasonable effort to prevent any loss, misuse, disclosure, or modification of the personal information, as well as any unauthorized access to personal information. Our computers and backups are password protected and paper files are kept in a secure location under lock and key when not in use.

Our team understands the sensitivity of the data entrusted to their care.
We will notify the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta, as soon as reasonable, of a security breach affecting personal information if it creates a real risk of significant harm to individuals. We retain client personal information only as long as it is reasonable to fulfill the purposes for which the information was collected or for legal/ business purposes.

We render client's personal information non-identifying or destroy records containing personal information once the information is no longer needed. We use appropriate security measures when destroying client's personal information, including shredding paper records and permanently deleting electronic records.

Access to records containing personal information: Clients have the right to request access to their own personal information in a record that is in our custody or under our control, subject to some exceptions. There will be a non-refundable administration fee of $250 that must be received with the written request. For example, organizations are required under the Personal Information and Protection Act to refuse to provide access to information that would reveal personal information about another individual.
Organizations are authorized under the Act to refuse access to personal information if disclosure would reveal confidential business information. Access may also be refused if the information is privileged or contained in mediation records. If we refuse a request in whole or in part, we will provide the reasons for the refusal. In some cases where exceptions apply, we may withhold that information and provide you with the remainder of the record. You may request access to your personal information by writing to Winnie Lau.

​You must provide sufficient information in your request to allow us to identify the information you are seeking. You may also request a correction of an error or omission in your personal information. We will respond to your request within 45 calendar days unless an extension is granted. We may charge a reasonable fee to provide information but not to make a correction. We will advise you of any other fees that may apply before beginning to process your request.
